1. Adventure Fit Camp: Week 7

It’s hard to believe that Fit Camp is almost over. We only have one more week left after this one.

Most recent lesson learned? Consistence is key.

Last week, we did lots of leg work that left me sore. But, I went to a Boot Camp Cardio class at the Women’s Health Center on Saturday. Then, I went on a walk/hike Sunday. At Fit Camp Monday, we went on a long jog up and down hills. Afterward I was exhausted, but today I’m not even sore.

It’s tough to keep on keepin’ on. But, it’s worth it. :)

  2. It’s time I showed what Adventure Fit Camp looks like. These are pictures from when we did the “Deck of Cards” workout yesterday. Our instructor took us through an entire deck of cards with each card representing a different workout.

    • Hearts = Pushups
    • Diamonds = Mountain climbers
    • Clubs = Squats
    • Spades = Burpees
    • 2-10 = Reps are face value
    • Jack-King = 15 reps
    • Aces = 25 reps
    • Jokers = 50 squat jumps

If you don’t know what burpees are, it’s where you drop to your hands, kick your legs out, bring them back in, stand up and jump. Let’s just say they made a few of us considered unfriending our instructor on Facebook. Just kidding. But, they do make you work up a sweat. This activity taught us that we don’t need any special equipment to get a heart-pumping workout at home. All you need is a deck of cards.

  3. A good reminder to listen to that still small voice

  4. Adventure Fit Camp: Take two

It’s week two. I’ve come to terms with the fact that being sore will be part of my life for these eight weeks. However, I’m also starting to reap the benefits of all this hard work. I can already see traces of definition in some of my muscles. And, I’m reaping the rewards of a good workout, such as breathing easier and having more energy.

A piece of this program I haven’t touched on too much is nutrition. I’ve never been a calorie counter. By never, I mean that I look the other way when I know a food label is near me. Not only that, but because I’ve never paid attention, calories have never meant a whole lot to me. In fact, I have almost always had two philosophies when it comes to my weight:

    1. As long as my pants fit, I’m happy. (Courtesy of my mother)
    2. I do my best to stop eating when I start to feel a little full so as to not overeat.

These philosophies have served me well for the past 10 years or so. However, Adventure Fit Camp has challenged me to make a deliberate effort to incorporate more fruits and veggies into my diet, as well as more protein. Eating healthy has proved to be much more refreshing. I could tell a difference between how I felt this morning when I (oops!) ate a doughnut and when I ate some fresh pineapple for a snack. Big difference.

My goal for Fit Camp was not to lose weight, but to learn how to add exercise to my busy life. It’s only week two, but I have already learned that a couple rewards of making healthy choices are feeling better overall (aside from the soreness) and having more energy. These perks are well worth the measly sacrifices: having aching muscles and cutting back on junk food.

  5. "It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad."

  6. Adventure Fit Camp: End of week one

I’m feelin’ it.  My legs, shoulders and upper back are sore (OK, I guess that’s nearly my whole body!). I have never been so aware of my muscles (or lack thereof).

The name Adventure Fit Camp is very fitting. Here’s why:

    ·       Adventure: When I was little, my dad used to take my three siblings and me on “adventures.” We never knew what was in store except that it would be fun and exciting. Adventure Fit Camp exhibits those elements in the sense that we don’t know what’s in store for us each session except that we will be out of breath and it won’t be the same as the last session.

    ·      Fit: I know for a fact that I will be in better shape when I’m done with Adventure Fit Camp than when I started. To prove it, the instructor takes our measurements before we start, at the half-way point and at the end. I’ll be sure to let you know what my progress is along the way.

    ·      Camp: Heading to summer camp always meant spending loads of time with great friends and making new ones. I can already say that’s true of Adventure Fit Camp. The gals in our group have been welcoming and encouraging from day one. We’re comfortable wearing no make-up and sweating (and stinking—yes, that smell is probably me) together. I think that says a lot.

I’ll check back in next week. Have a great weekend!

  7. My first week of Adventure Fit Camp

    Hi everyone,

I decided to give Adventure Fit Camp a whirl. It’s an eight-week nutrition and fitness program at the Medcenter One Women’s Health Center. I’m in the middle of week one. Here are some observations:

    • Who knew mustard has 0 calories?
    • You don’t need a gym to get a hard workout.
    • Stair steppers on a park bench are exhausting.
    • Working out with friends is amazing motivation.
    • Jogging is fun until you have to go uphill.
    • I’m less likely to eat junkfood when I know I’ll have to write it down later.

Good life lessons. I’m also happy to report that I’m less sore than I thought I would be. Hopefully I didn’t speak too soon. I tend to be one of those people whose body doesn’t scream out in pain from a hard workout until days later.

That’s all for now folks. I’ll let you know what the rest of week one brings.
